How to care Combination Skin

Combination Skin

As if dealing with oily or dry skin isn’t tough enough, those with combination skin have to cope with both! That’s because combination skin has oily characteristics (large pores, a constant shine, and breakouts) in the T-zone — that is, the forehead, nose, and chin area — and dry skin characteristics (itching, flakiness, redness) on the cheeks. As with those with an oily skin type, genes and hormones play a major role in having combination skin — and you can’t change the skin you’re in! What you can do is to learn how to manage your complexion’s complexities by finding a regimen that’ll simultaneously maintain oil control in your T-zone and moisture in your cheeks.

How to Balance Combination Skin:

– Be gentle. Wash your face with a mild, gel-based or foaming cleanser and lukewarm (not hot) water. If you use a toner, go for one that’s water- or glycerin-based.

– Use a relatively strong salicylic acid exfoliant on your T-zone to shrink and unclog pores. (Try a product with a lower percentage (for instance, 1%) of salicylic acid on the rest of your face or experiment to see what works best for you.

– Apply an oil-absorbing facial mask to your T-zone a couple of times a month.

– After washing your face, pat it dry; let your T-zone skin dry completely before putting anything, such as moisturizers or medication, on that area.

– Apply an emollient facial moisturizer to areas of your face that are normally dry and an extra-emollient moisturizer around your eyes.

– If your T-zone skin seems dry, try a light, nongreasy, oil-free moisturizer that contains ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, both of which gently retain moisture.

– Always choose fragrance-free, oil-free, nonirritating skin-care products and cosmetics to help keep pores clean and clear.

– Be vigilant about protecting skin from the sun every day in every season. Use an oil-free, broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.

– Blot yourself. One easy way to absorb oil without having to wash your face and reapply your makeup is to use blotting sheets. Stash a pack in your purse or desk to soak up “puddles” throughout the day.

– See your doctor. If your skin is prone to breakouts or a more serious acne problem, talk to your dermatologist about acne treatments and a personalized skin care regimen specifically designed to manage combination skin.

Everybody’s skin behaves differently, and combination skin can be tricky. Remember that caring for combination skin requires a little extra effort. It may take some trial and error before you figure out the best skin-care regimen for your complex skin type. But once you do, it’ll be just another part of your daily routine, and it’ll help you look and feel your best.
