Hair Care Tips For Healthy Hair

healthy hair

Don’t Brush Your Hair Excessively: Brushing your hair wears and thins out your cuticle therefore avoid it as much as possible. It was advised earlier to brush your hair 100 times to stimulate your follicles but there are better ways to do that, such as massaging your scalp. Brushing is too abrasive for the cuticle. The best time to brush your hair is that when it hair has dried after washing. Shampoo and conditioner your hair, rinse it in cold water, and then comb it with a wide-toothed comb to remove tangles. Let your hair dry completely. Then brush it 3- 4 times if you must.

Don’t Backcomb or Backbrush Your Hair: Backcombing/ Backbrushing is when your comb/ brush your hair from the end towards the scalp. It is like uprooting all the shingles on a root which are lying in a neat flat arrangement. This is against the direction in which the cuticle cells lie and can completely strip and damage the hair. And as I said earlier, use a homemade quality comn for combing. Do not use nylon brushes if your hair generates a lot of static electricity. Everyone can try natural boar bristle brush.

Don’t Blow-Dry Your Hair Completely: This one is obvious. Conditioners work by trapping some moisture inside your cuticle. Blowdrying your hair removes moisture from the cuticle. If you want to blowdry your hair, keep the dryer a little away from the hair, at least six inches, and, also, do not dry your hair completely. Let it be a little damp.

Avoid Silicones-based Shampoos/ Conditioners: To find out if a shampoo and conditioner contains silicone or not look at the ingredients on the label. If the ingredients on the label says Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone or silicone, avoid using the products. Remember that Dimethicone and Cyclomethicone are silicone derived emollients. Silicones coat your hair making it look shiny in the short term. However, they slowly start coating hair completely, creating a buildup and effectively sealing off moisture from reaching the cuticle. If you are using silicones shampoo/ conditioner however, be sure to use a clarifying shampoo periodically.

Avoid vigorously rubbing and drying your hair with a towel after the bath. Towel dry your hair instead. Better still, use a microfiber towel that helps abrosb water faster than a normal towel.

Chemical Hair Dyes Harm Your Hair: All permanent color changes require the dye to reach the cotex layer of the hair shaft. That means opening the cuticle. Most hair dyes can penetrate the layers, causing hair to dry out, produce fly-aways and create breakage that makes for open spots in the scalp. So if you want to permanently color your hair, I have one word for you- Don’t.

Consult Your Hair Stylist before you go for Perms: Perms chemically change the bonds in your hair to alter the shape of your hair. And if you are putting chemicals in your hair it is certainly not good for hair. Again, the damage to your hair depends on the condition of your hair before the perm. Treat your hair gently and with care after perms. Consult your hair stylist on how to take care of your hair.

Use some Natural Products for Your Hair: For hair which has less sebum, use olive oil or coconut oil for softening it. An effective shampoo can be made by boiling soapnuts with dried gooseberry (amla) using the strained extract. You can condition your hair naturally with lemon juice, lime juice or vinegar.

If you are going for swimming be sure to protect your hair from swimming pool chemicals/ sea water by using a leave-in conditioner, coconut oil or jojoba oil, or wearing a swimming cap.

If you keep a ponytail, do not use an overtight band. Use soft hair bands that do not pull or constrict the hair.
